Waterloo Regional Police say they have made an arrest in connection with a residential fire on May 16 in Cambridge.

That's when police responded to a dispute in the area of Alison Avenue at around 6:45 p.m. along with emergency services who were responding to reports of a house fire.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home, with damages estimated at $180,000, police said earlier this week.

At around 11:30 a.m. today, suspect Justin Van Hal was arrested in Cambridge.

The accused has been charged with:

  • Arson - Damage to Property
  • Cruelty to Animals
  • Assault
  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death (two counts)
  • Failing to Comply with Release Order (two counts)

The accused was held for a bail hearing and will appear in court on May 19, police said in a news release.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
