Waterloo Regional Police have arrested two individuals in connection to a grandparent scam.

On Jan. 12, a 90-year-old victim was defrauded of $8,000 after receiving a call advising that their grandson was in jail and money was needed to be sent to grant him bail, police said in a news release.

On Jan. 16, a 79-year-old was the victim of an attempted fraud when the suspects contacted them and advised of a similar scam requiring $9,000 to have their grandson released from jail.

The victim called police.

Police responded and located a male and female approaching the home of the 79-year-old male in Cambridge.

Police arrested the pair.

Through investigation, police were able to determine that the two were connected to the fraud incident that occurred on Jan. 12.

A 30-year-old male and a 23-year-old female, both from Quebec, were charged with fraud over $5,000.

The accused were held in police custody for a bail hearing, police said.
