Catholic board offers free summer learning opportunities to students

These programs provide an opportunity for students to prepare for high school, learn a language or work towards a credit

In an attempt to help students prepare for the 2023-2024 school year, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board will be running free summer learning programs for both elementary and secondary school students in July and August.

These programs are not summer school, but are meant as a way to keep learning continuous throughout the summer months.

Registration opens March 21.

Summer Fun with Languages

July 4 to 28, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Offered at two locations in Kitchener

These sessions for students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 will be run in a camp-like style using music, stories, crafts and games to teach a variety of languages including Arabic, Chinese, Igbo, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, Tigrigna and Ukrainian.

Summer Expedition

July 4 to 21, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Locations in Kitchener and Cambridge TBD

A hands-on literacy and numeracy support class for Grades 6, 7 and 8 with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Headstart to Grade 9

August 21 to 24, Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. or 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.

WCDSB secondary schools

This prep program will help Grade 8 graduates prepare for their high school career with lessons about literacy, numeracy and social adjustment.

Bridge to Success 

July 4 to 28, Monday to Thursday in person and Friday online from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

WCDSB secondary schools

Students entering Grade 9 can get a head start and earn their first high school credit with this Exploring Family Studies course.

Exploring Engineering

July 4 to 28, Monday to Thursday in person and Friday online from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

St. Benedicts Catholic Secondary School - 50 Saginaw Pkwy in Cambridge

Another way for students to earn their first high school credit. This program is an introduction to engineering design fundamentals, automotive engineering, architectural and civil engineering, and career exploration. It includes a field trip to an automation, manufacturing and robotics facility. The course is designed for students interested in an engineering certificate.
