Free backyard composters also available on Savage Drive while supplies last

Spring is here, and so is the free compost and mulch.

Starting today, the Cambridge free pick-up begins at the Savage Drive transfer station while quantities last.

What you need to know:

  • Maximum 5 bushels per vehicle
  • Bring your own shovel and containers
  • Wear closed-toed shoes

The region says it does its best to keep bunkers stocked but can't guarantee that material will be available for pick-up.

The mulch they produce can work well as an underdressing to suppress weeds and retain moisture. It is not decorative.

Backyard composters are also available free of charge on a first come, first served basis at the Household Hazardous Waste area of the Cambridge transfer station location only.

One backyard composter is available per household. Some assembly of backyard composters is required.

The Cambridge Waste Management site is located at 201 Savage Drive, Cambridge, and is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
