New Habitat for Humanity build in Cambridge will contain 24 affordable stacked townhouses

Hundreds of requests for information have been received from prospective tenants of the new build on Shantz Hill Road

Hoping to have shovels in the ground this fall, Habitat for Humanity is aiming to complete their affordable homes in Cambridge on Shantz Hill Road in two years time.

The organization is planning to construct two buildings containing 12 units each to create 24 stacked townhouses on the site. The new buildings will host a combination of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units.

“Completion is dependent on many things but all going according to plan, we hope to utilize volunteers and have the project completed in two years from groundbreaking,” said Maggie Moniz, director of community outreach for Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region.

The selection process for the new build in Cambridge has not yet opened, but Moniz said they have already received hundreds of requests for more information.

The selection process is very specific to apply for an affordable home with Habitat for Humanity, so many of those initial requests would be denied.

“All our units are still to be allocated,” she said.

Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region families are future homeowners who pay an interest-free mortgage geared to their income, said Moniz.

They are aiming to start building the 24 stacked affordable townhomes at 325 Shantz Hill Road at the end of the summer.

Understanding the dire need for affordable homes in the area, Moniz said they hope to continue to build more in Cambridge in the future.

“The challenge is finding affordable land on which to build,” she said.
