The Terry Fox Run is returning to an in-person event after a two year hiatus

After hosting the last two events virtually, Cambridge’s Terry Fox Run is back at Riverside Park this month.

For the past 41 years, Cambridge has been showing its support for Canadian legend, Terry Fox. This year, on September 18, the run is back for the first time in-person, since the start of the pandemic.

The run has been a staple in Cambridge since it started in 1981, only a few short months after Fox’s death.

Over the last 41 years, the Cambridge chapter has raised over $798,887 for the Terry Fox Foundation, adding $36,000 in 2021.

“Everyone has been touched by cancer,” said Emilia Strada, run organizer. “People get to raise money for a cause that is close to them or get to connect with others sharing similar experiences.”

The 5km run will take place at Riverside Park in Cambridge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. People are welcome to run, cycle, walk or participate in any way they can.

The run usually sees 180 to 200 people show up, but Strada is expecting more, since this is the first in-person event in a few years.

The Cambridge chapter has also been fundraising year round in an attempt to broaden their capabilities of collecting funds for the organization.

“We are at the farmers market, Canada Day event and are even looking at hosting a trivia night at a local pub,” said Strada.

The Yoga Loft in Preston is also helping out, hosting a fundraiser event every Sunday in September.

All of the money raised goes to the Terry Fox Foundation to help further cancer research and help families in need.

In the foundation’s history, they have raised over $850 million at over 10,000 events. This money has gone on to support over 1,300 individual projects for cancer research.

Local school's will be hosting their own event a few days later on September 23.

Runners looking to participate must fill out a registration form on the organization's website.

Donations can be made at the event or on the Terry Fox Foundation’s website
