The Waterloo Regional Police Service will be kicking off Police Week on May 13 with their annual open house.

Face painting, a bouncy castle, food trucks and a show from children’s performer Erick Traplin are just a few of the activities the community can expect at the police service headquarters located at 200 Maple Grove Rd.

Donations of non-perishable food items will also be collected on behalf of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

“We're looking forward to welcoming community members from across the region to celebrate Police Week,” Melissa Quarrie, public information officer for WRPS said.

“This free event, which WRPS has been putting on for over 20 years, will include information booths from WRPS units and external community partners and lots of family-friendly activities.”

Police Week runs from May 14 to May 20.

Various police units, including the Emergency Response, Canine, and Traffic Services, will be putting on demonstrations to give the community a better idea of the work that they do.

More than just a fun day for the community, the day serves as a way for the service to connect with residents and build positive relationships, Quarrie says.

“As we head into Police Week, our open house is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the important role our police officers and members play in community safety and our vital relationships and partnerships with the community in this regard,” she said.

“The open house is a fun-filled day where families can enjoy a variety of activities and connect with our members and partners to learn about how we can all play a role in community safety."

Additionally, the WRPS will be hosting open houses at their individual divisions leading up to Police Week, with their Hespeler Road detachment event happening on May 6 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
