Another of the Greatest Generation has Died🌺

George Ellwood Stevens died on January 7th, in his 101st year, in Preston, Cambridge at Fairview Mennonite Home. He was born October 17th, 1921 on Middle St., Preston and was the eighth and youngest child of John and Margaret Stevens. He is predeceased by his seven siblings, Viola, Rose, Duncan, Fred, Hilliard, Leonard and Martha. He was also raised along his nephew Ellsworth Rivers. George was educated in Preston and won the Yates award for highest academic achievement upon graduation.

He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a Pilot Officer, flying Wellington aircraft during WW2. He is survived by his loving war bride Jean of 76 years. George met and married Jean in England while he was serving with the RCAF. He is survived by his loving daughter Angela (Sandy), and predeceased by his loving son Neil (Lise) and lovingly remembered by his four grandchildren, Sarah (Ken), Steven, Natalie and Matthew (Amanda). George is also survived by his five great-grandchildren, William, Sophia, Teddy, Jolene and Diana Jean, and one great-great-grandchild, Claire. He is lovingly remembered by Jean’s sister Jose Rogers and her family in England, as well as Bill Macdonald, Beverly Coates, Barbara Onorato, John Stevens and many more relatives friends and neighbours.

George had a natural gift for music and singing and was a member of the Knox Presbyterian choir and the KW Harmonizers for 69 wonderful years. His career was in the Office Supply business, but his love and gift for photography was his passion. And wine making! George lived a happy and contented family life in his cherished Preston and will be dearly missed by all whom he loved and who loved him.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Hespeler Ward at FMLTC for their compassionate care of George over the past year. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to FMH, the Food Bank or to Knox Presbyterian Church, Preston. Due to Covid restrictions, a small private funeral will take place at noon on Saturday, January 15th with Chaplain Niamh Brown officiating. Internment immediately following at Parklawn Cemetery. We give thanks for George whose earthly journey has ended and who now dwells forever with the Lord.
