Kitchener man arrested following fraud investigation in Cambridge

The man allegedly opened multiple fraudulent bank accounts across Waterloo Region and Southern Ontario and deposited around $700,000 of fraudulent cheques, police say

The Waterloo Regional Police Service has made an arrest in connection to an ongoing fraud investigation. 

The investigation began in March 2022 after police received a fraud report at a financial institution located on Hespeler Road in Cambridge.

A male suspect had opened multiple fraudulent bank accounts across the Region of Waterloo and Southern Ontario and had deposited approximately $700,000 of fraudulent cheques into these accounts.

On Dec. 21, 2022, members of WRPS’ General Investigations Unit arrested a male in connection to this investigation on Hespeler Road in Cambridge.

As a result of the investigation, a 67-year-old Kitchener male has been charged with the following:

  • Fraud over $5,000
  • Uttering forged documents
  • Possession of an identity document
  • Possession of counterfeit mark
  • Laundering proceeds of crime
  • Personation (seven counts)

The accused was released with a court date on Jan. 30, 2023, in Kitchener.

The investigation is ongoing by members of WRPS’ General Investigations Unit.
